The recent limitations on importing new iPhones, caused by the lack of infrastructure in Iran to support eSIM technology, are finally being lifted. This major obstacle restricted imports to iPhones that supported physical SIM cards only. As a result, iPhone prices increased significantly. Now, with the move toward eSIM activation in Iran, it will be possible to supply Apple phones from all global markets. One mobile market importer stated that the gates to import wider global part numbers are now open. Consequently, we may witness a price reduction for iPhone 17 series devices.
Global Adoption of eSIM Technology
The global adoption of eSIM technology, particularly in the iPhone 17 series, has eliminated restrictions on importing Apple phones from only a few specific countries. Mehdi Bokaei, a mobile phone importer, explained to Digiato that with recent developments in eSIM technology, "Previously, purchasing from a few specific countries was possible in Iran. Now importers can buy from more diverse sources, and this will naturally lead to lower prices for these phones in Iran."
According to him, Iranian users have a strong preference for dual-SIM phones. This preference led to lower demand for eSIM-enabled versions in the past.
Registry Restrictions and Market Impact
Bokaei further stated, "Over time, and with the removal of registry restrictions for iPhone series 14 and onwards, conditions have changed. If the infrastructure for eSIM usage is provided in the country, purchasing and activating these phones will become simpler and cheaper."
He concluded by highlighting the slow progress in eSIM activation in Iran. "Unfortunately, as always, implementing new technologies comes with delays. However, if eSIM becomes widely adopted, we can expect the Iranian mobile market to benefit from its advantages and give buyers more freedom in choosing and importing devices."
Future Implications for Iran's Mobile Market
The widespread adoption of eSIM technology seems to hinge on the speed of mobile operators' implementation. If these companies accelerate their support for eSIM technology, it is likely that Iran's market will no longer be subject to the limitations of specific part numbers. As a result, we may see reduced prices for iPhone 17 series devices in the near future.
