Iran's telecommunications infrastructure chief, Behzad Akbari, has revealed that approximately 70% of the country's internet traffic is routed through VPNs, with nearly 80% of users relying on these tools.
Akbari expressed concerns over the impact of widespread VPN usage on network traffic engineering, stating, "This phenomenon disrupts service quality, cybersecurity, and balanced network load distribution. Under normal circumstances, user traffic is directed to the nearest content center based on location. However, VPN usage reroutes a significant portion of traffic from northern Iran toward Europe, increasing the network's vulnerability."
Additionally, Akbari announced the imminent launch of a system designed to issue warnings about DDoS attacks. "We are preparing a platform that will be unveiled next week. This system will provide security alerts to responsible entities and offer services to operators, who can then make them available to organizations," he said.
