Iran’s Cyber Police Confirm Mass SMS About U.S. President Was Result of Hack
Initial Investigations Indicate Hacking
Iran’s cyber police have confirmed that controversial mass text messages sent to citizens referencing the U.S. president were the result of unauthorized access to a domestic messaging platform.
According to Iran’s FATA Police, the bulk SMS campaign stemmed from a breach of the communication infrastructure operated by MAGFA, the Information Technology Expansion Center.
Judicial Case Opened
Javad Mokhtar-Rezaei, deputy for social affairs at FATA Police, told that the incident was caused by unauthorized access to the SMS short code used for the messages.
“The cause of this incident was unauthorized access (hacking) to the SMS short code. A judicial case has been opened. While initial investigations indicate hacking, FATA’s inquiries are still ongoing,” he said.
Message Sparked Online Speculation
On the previous day, a message reading, “The President of the United States is a man of action. Wait and see,” was sent from the short code 3000 to a number of citizens.
The text quickly triggered speculation and debate across Iranian social media platforms. Authorities have now confirmed that the messages originated from a breach of an internal system rather than an official or authorized campaign.
