Iran's judiciary head officially signed and published a regulatory decree on the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), in court proceedings. The move was a formal entry of the judiciary into AI for speeding up and ease of case handling.
As quoted by the Judiciary's Statistics and Information Technology Center (MAFA), the regulation was issued based on Article 113(a) of Iran's Seventh Five-Year Development Plan, which mandates the judiciary to implement modern technology in judicial processes.
Based on this regulation, the employment of AI software is allowed for judges to use in assisting in dispute resolution and handling cases, possibly reducing delay and judicial efficiency.
The 15-article rule dictates the means of implementation, the responsibilities of various judicial departments, and assigns supervision to the First Deputy of the Judiciary.
This was following a June directive to digitize and make judicial processes and case files more intelligent as an indication of a broader strategy to modernize Iran's legal system with technology.
