Iran Restores IPv6 After Month-Long Wartime Shutdown

Checks show Shatel, MCI, and Asiatech have resumed the service, while Irancell is still pending.

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) access, which had been drastically blocked since the start of the Iran-Israel war, has been restored to Iran, according to the review by Digiato.

The shutdown, which lasted about a month, significantly disrupted internet quality and access for users. Data by Cloudflare Radar shows that IPv6 connectivity began recovering today.

All major operators like Shatel, MCI (Hamrah Aval), and Asiatech had reinstated IPv6 by the time of publication, even though Irancell had not. Market observers expect all operators to follow suit, even though slowly.

IPv6 blocking had taken many services down, particularly those built on the protocol. IPv6-based VPNs were also taken out of commission for the time being.

This is not the first instance that Iranian authorities have IPv6 blocked. Experts say that as blocking is harder on IPv6, regulators have the tendency to deactivate the feature entirely before blocking IPv4.

At present, Digiato's checks confirm that apart from HTTP/3, all other popular internet protocols are once more accessible to users.
